I'll never return

"I'll never go to Korea." I never left anything in Korea." Have you ever said this when asked if you wanted to return? Most of us have at one time or another. Many of those that have returned to the land of the Morning Calm have said "I should have done this before. It helped me resolve many problems." Many looked at the places they fought and cried. Some, like Harold Ward, placed flowers on the hill near where he fought and where his brother died.

Over 54,000 American GI's gave their lives to save S. Korea from N. Korea and China. National Archives records show that the 2nd Infantry Division had 25,000 casualties either killed or wounded. Other army records show a much higher number. Reports from our 2ID veterans clearly show an even higher number. Many have had dreams about their action. Long after the war - one man told me that while drinking to over come his memories he shot and killed his daughter thinking she was the enemy coming at him.

Returning to Korea is one of the best healing treatments I have known. Many have resolved conflicts they never spoke about. Many have returned to see what was accomplished with all their work. While in Korea, strangers would approach them and say, "Thanks for what you did for my country". I've had that happen in department stores, on street corners and other places. One Korean saw my bumper sticker at Travis AFB and thanked me as did a LTC on another day.

Now is you chance to return. We never call the Revisit Programs. I don't recall being invited to visit during the war. I would have told them I was busy doing something else. Visitors would have been treated better. We are planning three trips to Korea. The first one will depart Sunday September 10, 2000 following our reunion at SeaTac, WA.

2001

Purpose to Commemorate Chipyong-ni and Hoengsong Battles of Feb. 12-13, 2001

This is not an official Commemoration. Many of us feel that in these two areas were some of our most important battles that helped change the course of the war. Approximately 5 nights in Korea. Hope to stay at or near either 2ID's Camp Casey Lodge or Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul. Shouldn't be full that time of year. Expect some French or Dutch to join in the trip from their country. I attended both the Dutch and French reunions this year and I heard about their plans.

Year 2001

Purpose to attend the Commemoration of Heartbreak Ridge, Bloody Ridge and Battle of the Out Posts on 18 Aug 2000.

More details as they become available.
